The time it takes to provide sincere appreciation and authentic encouragement is far eclipsed by the amount of time it lingers in the mind of the recipient.

The world appears to be increasingly populated by people who only look out for their own needs — and often at the expense of others.

“I don’t have time.”, “I forgot.”, “It’s not my thing.”, “I had no idea you wanted help.”, “I didn’t think there was anything I could do.”

All entirely reasonable. And yet, the people who want to support others somehow find a way.

You may have very little to give, but the power of a kind word and encouragement shouldn’t be underestimated.

The time it takes to provide sincere appreciation and authentic encouragement is far eclipsed by the amount of time it lingers in the mind of the recipient.

Being a supportive person means more than simply offering help because it’s convenient or with the hope of receiving something in return. It means helping others even when it isn’t always easy — although it often is.

If you’re lucky enough to be surrounded by genuinely supportive people who would do anything to help you, cherish them.

They’re a rarity.

And if you want to be that kind of person for someone, don’t hesitate.

Learn to let go.

When one learns to let go of the non-essentials that contribute very little value to their life, they create more space for things of higher value.

And sometimes what one values most from the removal of something from their life is the time & space that’s created by its absence.

Many people surround themselves with things that may, at one time, have been useful, but no longer serve the purpose for which they were acquired. They hold onto this “stuff” with the hope that it may one day once again be useful, but for most things, that day rarely comes. Think of fitness equipment gathering dust. Bottles. Old clothes.

Others remain habitually obligated to ongoing activities or functions that they’d no longer commit their time, energy, or resources to if they were to start over.

In both cases, people’s lives are adversely affected by a commitment to things they no longer value.

As one only has one life to live, it’s important to not waste it caught up in things that no longer matter — or in the acquisition and subsequent storage of items that add little to no value to their life.

Isn’t it time you take inventory of the things you value in your life and to let go of those things that are simply taking up your time or space and no longer serve you?

Use it or lose it.

Dramatic life changes can occur when one makes a conscious & deliberate effort to surround themselves with only those things that they truly value in life instead of being weighed down and exhausted by things that they don’t.

It’s not about how much the things that one has are worth, it’s about how much one values the things that they have.

Each day you awake, assume something good is going to happen to you.

And if a whole day passes and nothing good happens, realize it’s not that nothing good happened, it’s that you missed it.

Not everything good that happens to you in life comes with bells & whistles attached. Sometimes the good in our lives is composed very simple moments we take for granted.

If you don’t see the good in your day to day life, look more closely.

Because if you’re alive, it’s there.

Taking things for granted

From your relationships with people to the environment to modern day conveniences, the things that are most often taken for granted in the world require effort and energy to simply maintain them, let alone improve them.

Take the time to think about what it would be like if the things you appreciate most in the world became scarce or went missing.

Take the time to think about what you might be taking for granted.

And then take the time to express your gratitude for these things.

Not only will it give you a greater appreciation for the things you take for granted, it’ll remind you that there are people and places in the world where those things no longer exist or never did.

And as a result, not only increase your appreciation for what you have, increase your desire to maintain or improve upon it.

There’s a saying, “You don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone.”

Be sure you take inventory.

Caring, appreciation, and gratitude

The primary message you communicate when you act like you don’t care is that you don’t care.

If you care about something, appreciate it, or are grateful for it, be sure your actions consistently communicate these sentiments.

You may think something, but until you convert a thought into an action, it’s just potential energy.

Remember to reinforce your positive thoughts and feelings with your actions and not solely express yourself through words.

Anyone can say anything. You reinforce the truth in your words when your actions are consistently congruent with not only what you say, but how, where, and when you choose to act.

Look for the good

Your mission, if you choose to accept it today, is to look for helpful people.

Look for the courteous, the patient, the generous.

Look for those who make others smile.
Look for the encouragers.
Look for those who show kindness.
Look for those who help set a good example for others to follow.

Don’t focus on a lack of any of these things. Of course negativity exists. Nor is it a challenge to find. That’s not the point.

Just focus on finding the above positive things — as you might if you were on a scavenger hunt.

Look for the good.

If you discover something you don’t like, either take action to fix it (if you can) or simply acknowledge it and move on. Let it go.

Today’s mission is about finding the good stuff that often goes unnoticed.

Look for it.
Find it.
Remember it.
Be happy it exists.

And make more of it if you so choose.
